October is the sweet spot for one of the simplest and most fun group outings around Chicago: a harvest-season run. The suburbs and the countryside around the city fill up with apple orchards, pumpkin patches, corn mazes, hayrides, and cider donuts. It is exactly the kind of trip a passenger van was made for — one vehicle, everyone together, and plenty of room in the back for everything you haul home.
The route practically plans itself. Start west: the Fox Valley and the Woodstock area have working apple orchards with pick-your-own apples, fresh cider, and bakery stands. Then swing north toward South Barrington and Hampshire for the big pumpkin farm experiences — petting zoos, pig races, giant slides, and corn mazes the whole group can tackle together. From there, Homer Glen and the southwest suburbs offer more family-run patches with kettle corn, caramel apples, and bonfire nights.
Why bring a van? Count the gear: jackets for ten people, a cooler with lunch, and on the way home — bags of apples, pumpkins, mums, apple cider gallons, and the giant pumpkin someone will insist is "totally fine" in the hallway. Cars mean multiple trunks and multiple parking fees; one 10-passenger van means one tank of gas split ten ways, one parking spot, and zero chance of losing half the group in traffic.
October runs through Halloween and early November at most farms, so book your minivan rental in Chicago now, load the cooler, and go chase fall colors and cider donuts with the people you like most.
