About three hours southeast of Chicago, near Marshall, Indiana, Turkey Run State Park feels like a different world. Deep sandstone gorges, hemlock groves, and Sugar Creek cutting through ancient rock make it one of the Midwest's most dramatic day trips — and in mid-October the maples and oaks turn the ravines red, orange, and gold. For a group of friends, a scout troop, a church outing, or three generations of one family, it is the kind of place that is much easier — and much more fun — when everyone rides together.
The park's trail system is the main event. Trail 3 is the famous one: ladders, narrow canyon walls, and a walk right through the creek bed below towering sandstone. Trail 1 follows Sugar Creek past the Narrows and an old quarry, while shorter loops near the nature center work well for younger kids and grandparents. Stop at the nature center first for trail maps, wildlife exhibits, and the planetarium schedule, then cross the suspension bridge over Sugar Creek for the best photo of the day.
Beyond hiking, groups can rent canoes or kayaks on Sugar Creek in season, visit the historic Lusk Home, and detour to the covered bridges Parke County is famous for — the county calls itself the Covered Bridge Capital of the World, with 31 historic bridges, and the annual Covered Bridge Festival runs through mid-October. Pack a picnic: the park has shaded shelters that seat a whole group, and a van makes hauling coolers, folding chairs, and dry clothes simple.
The drive is about 180 miles each way via I-65 and US-41, so carpooling in separate cars means someone always gets lost at the last turn. With a 10-passenger van rental in Chicago, one driver handles the route, everyone arrives together, and there is room for backpacks, snacks, and the hiking boots nobody wants to wear on the highway. Leave Chicago by 7 a.m., hike through the cool morning, picnic at noon, and you will be home by early evening — tired, happy, and already planning the next gorge.
