The Southern Unit — roughly two hours from the city via I-94 — stretches across 20,000 acres of kettle lakes, glacial moraines, and hardwood forest that turns a ridiculous spectrum of gold, copper, and crimson at peak color. And peak here usually lands in mid-October, about a week or two ahead of northern Illinois.
A van makes this trip dramatically better than a car. The Kettle Moraine Scenic Drive winds for 115 miles through both units of the forest, and a tall, roomy minivan rental from Chicago gives everyone a panoramic view of the color instead of craning necks over headrests. A perfect one-day loop
Start at the Lapham Peak Unit in Delafield, where the observation tower rises 45 feet above the forest canopy — from the top you get a 360-degree sweep of fall color all the way to downtown Milwaukee on a clear day. Then work your way west along the scenic drive through the countryside around Eagle. Stop at the Old World Wisconsin historic village (the foliage around its 1880s farmsteads is a photographer's dream), and finish the loop at Whitewater Lake or the scenic overlooks near Palmyra.
It's also a great format for a family reunion or a friends' outing: one van comfortably fits kids, grandparents, and all the gear, and nobody arrives exhausted because the driving is shared and the company is good. End the day in Lake Geneva for dinner on the waterfront before the two-hour cruise home.
